Craft beer and pizza come together in Shelburne

There's just something about a hot piece of pizza and an icy cold glass of beer.  At least that's the thinking behind one place in Shelburne.

"There's nothing better than pizza and beer together. Fiddlehead makes some great brews here in Vermont," said Matt Mertens, a frequent customer.  "I haven't had pizza like this anywhere else in Vermont."

Two businesses -- one building -- combing hand crafted pizza with local brews.

Buddy Koerner is the man in front of the wood fire oven at Follino's Pizza. Follino's creates unique pizza combos on a crust they describe as not toothin -- but not too chewy. All of the food is cooked right here -- in this oven. Pizzas can cook in just 90 seconds. "You kind of burn the skin off and then the inside gets tender," Koerner said.

The oven uses stones and bricks to hold heat.  The pizzas cook directly on those stones. Cooking like this is an art and so is pizza making.

Scallop bacon is on the menu today.

Buddy's father owns the building. He always envisioned a local brewery here to wash down home made pizza like the family often made at home in their brick oven. That's where Matt Cohen and Fiddlehead Brewing Company comes in. "We sell 60 barrels of IPA a week," Cohen said.

Reporter Gina Bullard: Is that a lot?

Matt Cohen: It sure is.

Cohen was the head brewer at Magic Hat for 13 years before opening Fiddlehead -- named after young edible ferns that many Vermonter's love. You can only find Fiddlehead beers on draft at some local bars -- and of course -- at the brewery. "Whether you're new to craft beer or enjoyed it for a long time, Fiddlehead can check the box for both of those consumers," Cohen said. "When we opened we were hoping to make 500 barrels and we ended up producing 1,600 barrels, so we had a successful first year and we're looking to double this year."

Not only are these businesses next to each other, but Follinos is BYOB, so that means you can take your Fiddlehead right in and enjoy -- what some say -- is the perfect combo.

"Everybody loves pizza and most people love beer," Koerner said.

"Pizza and beer -- it's a great combo. It works for a reason because it's so awesome," Cohen said.

An awesome Made in Vermont combo that's thirst quenching, stomach filling and business boosting.
