HANOVER, N.H. -
Former Surgeon General and Dartmouth Medical School professor C. Everett Koop died Monday in Hanover.
Koop became Surgeon General in 1981 under President Ronald Reagan and served until 1989. He was known for his efforts to reduce smoking and for speaking out about AIDS just as the virus was identified. Koop said that condoms and sex education could help stop the spread of AIDS -- angering some conservatives.
Koop was a practicing pediatrician for most of his career. He founded the Koop Institute at Dartmouth Medical School after he left Washington. C. Everett Koop was 96.
