BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The husband of the now-jailed former office manager of a small Vermont electric utility has agreed to leave the family home in Hardwick as part of an effort to settle a civil lawsuit filed by the U.S. government.
Federal prosecutors have filed a civil forfeiture case against Joyce Bellavance who is now in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges she embezzled $1.6 million from her former employer, the Hardwick Electric Department.
The Burlington Free Press is reporting that Bellavance's husband, Marc Bellavance, agreed to vacate the house by Friday and leave certain valuable furnishings behind.
U.S. Attorney Tristram Coffin says that once the house and other items are sold, the government will have recovered about $750,000. The utility also received an insurance settlement of about $500,000.
