Vermont lawmakers say they're concerned about a looming series of automatic federal budget cuts set to take effect Friday.
Democrat House Speaker Shap Smith say next year's budget is already tight, and any cuts from Washington could make it hard to fund some of the governor's spending initiatives.
Vermont is expected to lose about $15 million in the cuts, mostly to education, mental health and environmental programs. As many as 1,000 defense-related workers could also be furloughed.
