THETFORD, Vt. -

Carmen Tarleton says she's feeling great following her face transplant surgery.

The Vermont woman was badly disfigured when her estranged husband doused her with lye in 2007. It has been a long and painful road to recovery, culminating last month with a face transplant.

Tarleton underwent the surgery at a hospital in Boston. She is just the fifth person to ever undergo the procedure.

Friday she granted her first interview, speaking by phone to the hosts of the syndicated television show "The Doctors."

"Well, it has hit me that I have a new face. And it feels really, really good to look in the mirror this time, compared to last time I had to look in the mirror. So it's just a big blessing," Tarleton said.

It will be another four to eight weeks before Carmen Tarleton is ready to show her new face to the world.
