Vermont Yankee is getting an exemption from certain inspection rules from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The Rutland Herald reports the NRC is granting permission to change the way inspectors test the reactor head for seal leaks during its upcoming refueling outage.
Vermont Yankee spokespeople say they are asking for this exemption because this code creates impractical hardship for inspectors without increasing the level of quality or safety.
The reactor is currently operating at 91 percent as it prepares for the scheduled outage this spring.
