ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior Lauren Wheeler drained a 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining to break a 43-43 tie and give No. 6 Vermont a 46-43 lead over No. 3 UMBC. Annie Wheeler added a free throw with five seconds left to seal a 47-43 win in the quarterfinals of the 2013 America East Women's Basketball Championships hosted by the University at Albany at SEFCU Arena.
Wheeler had missed a layup 10 seconds earlier and the Retrievers were able to sink one of two free throws to knot the game up at 43-43 with 36 seconds left. Vermont came down the court on the next possession and Tierra Shumpert sent a pass over to Wheeler on the left wing for the shot that would send UVM into the America East semifinals for the conference record 18th time.
Wheeler finished the game with a team-high 10 points and fellow senior Lauren Buschmann added a game-high 11 rebounds and eight points before fouling out. Niki Taylor chipped in nine points and nine rebounds.
The Catamounts advance to the semifinal round for the first time since 2010, as coach Lori Gear McBride earns her first America East tournament victory. Vermont will meet No. 2-seeded Hartford in the semifinals on Sunday (March 10) at 11 a.m. at SEFCU Arena.
