ALBANY, N.Y. – The Vermont Catamounts used a 27-3 run in the second half to erase a six-point halftime deficit and post a 61-42 victory over New Hampshire in the quarterfinals of the 2013 America East Men's Basketball Championships at SEFCU Arena on the University at Albany campus.
Vermont, the No. 2 seed, earns its 20th win of the year to move to 20-10 overall, while No. 7 New Hampshire closes the season with a 9-20 mark.
Candon Rusin scored a team-high 14 points in 21 minutes off the bench to lead UVM. Sandro Carissimo added 10 points and seven Catamounts scored six or more points in the contest.
Ferg Myrick paced New Hampshire with a game-high 15 points and added six rebounds. Patrick Konan chipped in 12 points for the Wildcats.
Vermont fell behind 26-20 at the half after shooting just 26.9 percent from the floor. The Wildcats shot an even 50 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.
Senior Trey Blue helped energize the Catamounts in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring five points in the first three minutes. Blue's 3-pointer at the 18:08 mark of the stanza sparked UVM's big run, as the Catamounts erased an eight-point deficit and built a 16 point lead, 49-33, with 7:53 left in the game.
Vermont's lead would grow to 19 and UVM would ease to the win. The Catamounts finished the second half out scoring New Hampshire 41-16.
UVM made just seven field goals in the first 20 minutes of action, but matched that in the first nine minutes of the second half. UVM finished the second stanza shooting 58.3 percent from the floor and held New Hampshire to just four field goals in the final 20 minutes.
Vermont moves onto the America East Semifinals for the 11th time in 12 years and is 22-7 in the last 12 seasons in the America East Championship.
UVM will face No. 6 UMBC Sunday at 5 p.m. The Vermont women will face No. 2 Hartford in tomorrow at 11 a.m.
