Sanders: Sequester cuts to hit social safety net

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) says corporate America needs to do more to close the federal budget gap.

Monday morning Sanders hosted leaders from Vermont social service agencies to talk about how budget cuts from the sequester will impact them.

Southern Vermont Community Action officials said they are slated to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars targeted toward homeless and at-risk families.

Marianne Miller with the Central Vermont Community Action Council said the cuts are on track to eliminate childcare for 170 kids. "Families who depend on Head Start for childcare who lose that childcare have their employment in jeopardy and may not be able to either find childcare or place their child in a high quality childcare program," she said.

Sen. Sanders argues that the federal government needs to do more to close what he calls corporate loopholes. He said large companies are avoiding more than $100 billion dollars in taxes by setting up offshore accounts.
