Maple producers in prime season

Posted: Updated:
CHITTENDEN, Vt. -

It is that time of the year -- the smell of maple syrup is in the air.

Maple producers across the state took advantage of the beautiful weather this past weekend to start boiling sap. Maple syrup makers say warm days and cold nights work best.  They are enjoying the weather and the start of the season.

"It's beautiful, a nice day out, warm -- so the sap is running. And you need to boil it when you get it," said Tommy Garofano of Chittenden.

Garofano has only been in the maple syrup business a few years but he knows that when the sap is running -- it's time to take advantage. Most maple sugaring operations across the state have also started to boil and as the steam continues to rise out of sugar shacks, consumers know the sweet stuff is on the way.
