Grace Lane, 8, won the "Be a Famous Writer" contest for her age group. The third-grader at Northfield Elementary School won the top honor for her story "The Magic Piano." Her entry beat out more than 500 other submissions from 15 states. For her prize, Grace's book was illustrated and printed. She gets a copy and so does the school library. She also won $300 to buy new books for her school.
Reporter Kristin Carlson: What was it like to be finally able to see your book?
Grace Lane: It was very interesting. It was like open the box, wait awhile to open it, open it!
Kristin Carlson: What did you think when you opened it?
Grace Lane: It was exciting.
Kristin Carlson: Why is it important for people to read and write?
Grace Lane: It's important to share your feelings and what you've been thinking about-- that's what I like about reading and writing.
As part of winning the contest, Grace also had her story read by a celebrity to the school via Skype. Watch the video for more.
