Vermont to help buy out 5 Irene-damaged homes

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The state of Vermont is going to use grant money to help towns buy out five homes destroyed or damaged by Tropical Storm Irene that are ineligible for a federal buyout program.

The money will come from a $21.6 million community development block grant.

The money also is being used to help pay the 25 percent match for homes that were eligible for funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Officials aren't sure how many homes will be bought out, but FEMA has committed about $13 million to help buy out properties that were too badly damaged to be reoccupied in areas believed to be prone to future flooding.

Four of the five homes that were ineligible for FEMA funding are in Jamaica. The fifth is in Hartford.
