SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. -
Hikers who climb all of high peaks of the Adirondacks are part of an exclusive club known as the "46ers."
Now, the village of Saranac Lake is kicking off its own mini, less strenuous version of the popular hikes, by inviting climbers to scale six mountain peaks around Saranac Lake.
"Whenever someone completes all six they become a Saranac Lake 6er. They get a patch, they get their own bumper sticker, and they get their own number. They could be Saranac Lake 6er number one," said Mayor Clyde Rabideau, D-Saranac Lake. "The benefit to the community is tourism, tourism, tourism. We have adventure companies and hotels putting together 6er packages. Why? Because you can do this in a weekend."
The Saranac Lake 6er program kicks off this Memorial Day weekend. Those who scale all six mountains will get special recognition. The mayor says he hopes it will attract more visitors to the Adirondack region.
