Tyler Daniel Bean is an artist you might want to keep your ears open for. Besides being named an international honor, the Burlington artist has a few things that sets him apart from the rest.
"I felt this sinking in my chest of like this is actually real, people are going to know who I am," said Bean. A feeling many musicians say they have felt during their musical journeys. But for Bean, a Vermonter, a life-changing moment 'amped' his career when he was named the top 100 "must see bands" this year in Alternative Press.
"I didn't believe it until I got the interview and they told me who they were, where they were calling about, what they were calling about. It was mind-blowing," said Bean. It's not clear how the magazine discovered Bean's music. He describes himself as an indie-rock artist who looks at music as an outlet.
"It's just sort of a way to express what I'm feeling in a way that I can't with other people. It's a way of being cathartic. It's a way of just letting things close up naturally," said Bean. And the tunes do come naturally. He can't read music or even tell you what chords he's playing. "From what I've been told by people who know what they're doing, I'm playing a lot of inverted chords, which is over my head," Bean explains.
Bean writes and plays his own music, picking up band members along the way. His lyrics are based on people he loves and says his inspiration comes from what is playing in his head. While on tour this past January, Bean and his band were traveling to their next destination when their van broke down. When they finally reached a place to stay, Bean opened his phone and found an email about making "the top 100."
"I don't think that anyone really expects to do anything with music anymore just because of how it works as a business and how hard it is to get by," said Bean. At first, he wasn't allowed to tell anyone about making the list. Not even his parents. "I think when my parents realized that, they realized I was following through with the dream I've had since I was a kid," said Bean.
Bean recently released his first album called Longing in November of 2012. He plans to go on tour this July, and in one year, he will have played almost 100 shows across the country.
