State champions crowned in girls hockey

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

It was an action packed night at Gutterson Field House as state champions were crowned in DI & DII girls high school hockey.

In the early contest, Harwood and North Country played an instant classic featuring two outstanding goaltending efforts. Three periods wouldn't be enough as the game went into overtime. In that extra session, Highlanders Hayley Martini would seal it with a game-winning goal less than four minutes in. It was the first championship in Harwood's history.

Following that contest, BFA-St. Albans met Essex in the girls DI championship game. After a quiet first period, the Comets put the game away in the second with three straight goals. They go on to top the Hornets 3-0 for their third title in the last four years. Danielle Schreiner led the way with three points while Shanley Howrigan pitch a shutout in net.
