Monarch butterfly population falls in Mexico

Posted: Updated:
MEXICO CITY -

Scientists are concerned about the Monarch butterfly population.

The butterflies migrate from Vermont to their winter home in Mexico, but this year the number that completed that journey sank to its lowest level in at least 20 years, dropping 60 percent in the annual census compared to December 2011.

The Mexican government and a conservation alliance say extreme weather and changing farming practices are likely to blame.
