5 children injured in Tunbridge school bus accident

TUNBRIDGE, Vt. -

Tossed around like ping pong balls. That's what emergency crews say happened to young students in Tunbridge where five were sent to the hospital after their bus flipped over.

"When we arrived on scene the school bus was over a short embankment about six to eight feet down the school bus was on its side," said Tunbridge Fire Chief, John Durke who was first to arrive on the scene. He says the bus was on its side in a muddy ditch on Strafford Road. 15 of the 20 students on board climbed out unscathed.

"There were kids in different vehicles. Bypassers put them in to help keep them warm. It was pretty chilly," Durkee added.

The other five students were taken to area hospitals. They sustained cuts and bruises when windows shattered as they were tossed around in the tumble.

"Busses don't have safety belts. They were probably bouncing around there like ping pong balls," Durkee said.

But, the crash could have been worse. It turns out many students who would normally be on the bus were at an afterschool concert. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. But Durkee says weather was a factor, "There was snow squalls up in that area. The roads down here were dry, but up around the corner there the road was covered and slippery."

The 15 students who were aided by passersby were eventually transported back to the school where they were cleared by EMTs before being released to their parents.
