Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy is the most senior member of the U.S. Senate, but perhaps the devout Catholic has higher ambitions. He joked about the election of the pope during an exchange with Senator John Cornyn Thursday.
Sen. John Cornyn/R-Texas: I would note that I do have other amendments, but in order to maintain the pleasant disposition of the chairman (laughter) and not to burn any bridges unnecessarily (laughter)...
Sen. Patrick Leahy/D-Vermont: And this close to St. Patrick's Day.
Sen. John Cornyn: I would, at least not right now; I'll withhold further amendments for the floor. Thank you.
Sen. Patrick Leahy: I appreciate that. The senator from Texas knows of my disappointment in not being elected pope so that (laughter), I appreciate, I appreciate his courtesy there. And, I know I'm going to pay for that smart aleck remark.
That exchange took place as the Senate Judiciary Committee prepared to vote on gun control legislation. The proposed ban on a variety of assault weapons advanced out of committee on a 10-8 vote with Leahy and the rest of the committee's Democrats voting for the bill and all of the Republican's voting against.
