Rice and CVU will meet for the Division I Girls Basketball State Championship. The Green Knights beat Essex, 51-41 and the Redhawks beat Burlington, 53-47 in Thursday night's state semifinals at Patrick Gymnasium.
In the first game of the night, top seed CVU used a 12-0 run in the first quarter to take a lead on the fifth seeded Seahorses and never look back. Emily Kinneston was the only CVU player in double figures with 14 points. Kaelyn Kohlasch and Laurel Jaunich each had 9 points for 22-0 CVU. Burlington's Ajla Medic led all scorers with 21 points.
#3 Essex had a 16-10 lead after one quarter against #2 Rice in the second game of the night. The Green Knights however, answered with a 9-0 run in the second quarter taking the lead for good. Rice's Cassidy Derda led all scorers with 17 points. She also grabbed 11 rebounds. Teammate Hailee Barron had 16 points. Kari Lavalette led Essex with 14 points.
This will be the third straight year CVU and Rice have met for a state championship. The Green Knights have won the last two titles.
