Vt. lawmakers consider candy tax

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont lawmakers are considering adding candy to a proposed sugary-beverages tax.

In the House Ways and Means committee Friday, lobbyists from the Vermont Grocer's Association argued against the proposed tax, or removing sugar-loaded items from the sales tax exemption.

Jim Harrison with the Vermont Grocers' Association said because of the definitions of soft-drinks and candy, similar products would face far different tax rates. "We got to get out of our comfort zone of what we think of soft drinks are -- that's not a soft drink any longer, so forget everything you learned so far, this is a soft-drink, this is not a soft-drink," he said.

Health advocates lobbying for a sugar-sweetened beverage tax do not want to see that happen by simply lifting the sales tax exemption.
