Popular Rutland restaurant closing

RUTLAND, Vt. -

A popular Rutland restaurant closed its doors for good on Monday morning.

South Station Restaurant has been owned and operated by William Gillam since 2006. Gillam says South Station couldn't weather the economy, so he donated all remaining food to a homeless shelter in Rutland.

"He has probably provided 20 meals, which means about 2,000 people. And it's not costing us anything other than heating it up. So, I think it's important to say that even when they are down and out, they have thought of others," said Sharon Russell of the Open Door Mission.

Russell says this donation is the single largest food donation that Open Door Mission has ever received. The shelter serves around 60 people during each meal and Russell hopes this donation will feed those in need for nearly a month.
