Searching for signs of spring in the snow

WAITSFIELD, Vt. -

Wednesday morning, South Burlington looked like a winter wonderland. The sun made the snow sparkle. With all this winter-like beauty it's easy to forget it's the first day of spring.

Dennis Curran took advantage of the wintry weather. He's been taking professional photos for more than 45 years.

"I'll get to do some more assignments now which is great," said Curran of Curran Photography.

He loves being outside, but on this day Curran wishes there was a little more sun in Waitsfield to punch up his pictures.

Just down the road at the Hyde Away Inn & Restaurant, Bruce Hyde doesn't mind a bit of shoveling. The snow means another busy weekend ahead.

"I am longing for spring, but we'll get the business when we can. It's pretty quiet around here the rest of the year," Hyde said.

Last year the first day of spring was more like mid-summer. Temperatures reached 80 degrees.

"When everything starts greening up the velvet gets higher every day with that nice green, it's such a beautiful time of the year," Hyde said.

At Beaudry's General Store in Huntington, Linda Pecor says customers want spring weather and so does she.

"I am ready for spring this year. Not that it's been a hard winter, but I am ready. I'm anxious for spring flowers and I'm just ready, really ready," Pecor said.

"A little sunshine, a little warmer temperature makes people feel great about spring coming. So I'd like to see it a little warmer," said Chris Conant of Claussen's Florist and Greenhouse.

One place that feels like spring is Claussen's Florist and Greenhouse-- at least inside the Colchester business.

"With a hard winter, lot of snow, people are pumped to come in and buy plants and flowering plants," Conant said.

But back in South Burlington it's back to reality. As the day went on, so did the snow. And spring seems a long way off.
