TV satellite tax not coming to Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Satellite TV customers were warned a new tax may be coming. But, Channel 3 News has confirmed that is just not true.

Satellite subscribers across the state received an email this week telling them the House is "considering a tax hike that will force you to pay 5% more every month for the DISH service you love."

According to Rep. Janet Ancel, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, the proposal came from rival cable companies and was on a long list of possibilities to help the state raise revenue.  But some customers have no other option than satellite TV, so the committee quickly took the proposed tax off the table.

"The argument for applying the tax is that these are similar businesses and are in competition with each other and should be taxed the same but I think this argument would carry more weight if both of them were equally available for consumers to sign up for," Ancel said.

Ancel said the idea never even made it so far as to gain a sponsor within the committee.
