Military families welcome new school program.

NEW ORLEANS, March 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Louisiana Virtual Charter Academy (LAVCA), a statewide online public charter school, announced that it is launching a new blended learning program at the Barksdale Air Force Base Youth Center to support military families in the school.

The learning center is located at the Barksdale Air Force Base Youth Center and open every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for LAVCA students in grades K-12 stationed in the area.

The blended program allows students to attend regularly scheduled online courses in the company of other classmates in a facility equipped with classrooms, a computer lab, high speed internet, in addition to the many activities and services offered at the Youth Center.  Teachers and advisors from LAVCA will be on site to provide direct instruction, support and guidance to students as they progress through their individualized learning plans at the school. Parent volunteers will also actively support student learning.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to offer an onsite program to students affiliated with Barksdale Air Force Base," said Dr. Perry Daniel, LAVCA Head of School. "Our school is proud to serve our military families and we believe that this program will provide additional support to families and help students achieve academic success.  The youth center at the base is an incredible facility and we're grateful for the support we've received from Barksdale AFB community.

A growing number of students are enrolling in online schools, including military families who choose online public schools for the rigorous academics and flexibility. The learning center will provide highly individualized learning experiences to students through a combination of online learning and face-to-face instruction and support using Barksdale Youth Center facilities.

LAVCA uses the award-winning curriculum developed by the leading national online learning provider, K12 Inc. Students work independently through their assigned courses and their individualized learning plans, and also receive direct instruction through engaging web-based classes taught by certified teachers. Teachers work individually with students in one-on-one sessions to provide support and guidance.
