NH House rejects 1 gambling bill, tables another

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The New Hampshire House has killed a casino bill, but has still left open the possibility of passing a gambling measure.

The House voted 249-65 Thursday to reject a bill that would have allowed two casinos. Opponents argued it wouldn't produce enough money for the state and didn't have a competitive licensing process.

However, another bill allowing up to six venues with slots was kept alive by a vote of 170-160. House members argued they need a bargaining position with the Senate, where a gambling bill was passed last week.

That bill calls for one casino and it has Gov. Maggie Hassan's support. She included $80 million in casino license fees in her budget. Some House members said one casino creates a monopoly and indicated they prefer more venues.
