Former Vt. sheriff's deputy acquitted in molestation case

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -

Jurors have found a former sheriff's deputy not guilty of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child.

The jury initially told the judge Wednesday night they were deadlocked in the case of Richard Kelley, 57, of Pawlet. But they returned to deliberate Thursday, and just before 2 p.m., they returned not guilty verdicts on the two felony counts.

Kelley was accused of molesting a 13-year-old girl. Kelley denied the allegations on the stand and his lawyer pointed out inconsistencies in the girl's statements to police.

After the not guilty verdict was delivered Thursday, Kelley's lawyer scolded the state for a sloppy investigation and said of his client, "Now someone tell him where he can go to get his reputation back."
