Report ranks Vt. hospital safety

Consumer Reports released its latest hospital ratings, and Central Vermont Medical Center is still the best in the state.

The rankings evaluate five categories: re-admissions, complications, communication, infection rates and the overuse of CT scans.

Central Vermont in Berlin got a 69.

In New York, the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone outranked its competitors in the North Country with a score of 57.

In our region of New Hampshire, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center was at the top with 57.

The highest possible score is 100, but the top hospital in America-- the Bellin Memorial Hospital in Green Bay-- got only a 74.

Safety scores for other area hospitals included:

• Northwestern Medical Center -- 67
• Fletcher Allen Health Care -- 59
• Brattleboro Memorial Hospital -- 54
• Southwestern Vermont Medical Center -- 54
• Rutland Regional Medical Center -- 53
• Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital -- 41
