All in the family at Orford, NH maple operation

ORFORD, NH -

Sugar houses across the region continued to open their doors to the public this weekend -- including those across the river in New Hampshire.

At the Mount Cube Farm in Orford it's a family affair.  On Sunday members of the community got an up close look at how the sap is boiled down to sweet syrup.  The farm has about 9,000 taps.  Peter Thomson is the current owner.  His father, former New Hampshire Governor Meldrim Thomson, bought the farm decades ago.

"In order to buy the property he made sure that the owner would show him how to make maple syrup. The owner did come up for two weeks and showed my dad and myself how to do it. That's the way it took off and my father loved to do this business," Peter Thomson said.

The fourth generation of Thomsons made it out Sunday to enjoy maple cotton candy and other sweet treats.  While the sap was flowing at this farm, there have been reports across the region that cold weather is delaying this year's maple crop.
