Emergency unemployment cut by federal budget cuts

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Labor says federal budget cuts are being made to emergency unemployment benefits.

Starting at the end of the month, the federal government will require a 10.7% cut in benefits to beneficiaries who are on the Federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, as part of the automatic budget cuts known as sequestration.

The Labor Department says the cuts will affect claims starting the week of April 6.

The emergency benefits go to beneficiaries who have exhausted their regular unemployment benefits and can last up to 14 weeks.

Labor commissioner Annie Noonan says Vermont has no control over the cuts in benefits and will continue to work with participants to help them find jobs.
