Catamount-themed art on display in Bennington

Posted: Updated:

The rare catamount will become a common sight in Bennington in the next few months.

This year's Catamount Art Prowl will feature 39 life-sized mountain lions. Two are currently on display at the Vt. Statehouse in Montpelier. Local artists bring the pieces to life by adding color. Once sold, profits benefit the community.

"It's win-win; the artist gets money from it, the business gets the revenue coming in and then the Chamber of Commerce-- when they auction off at the end-- gets and our community gets future marketing dollars," said Lindy Lynch, chairwoman of the Catamount Prowl.

In 2005, the event raised nearly $300,000 using moose instead of catamounts.

The full group of big cats will be unveiled in May, and the individual works will be auctioned off in October. And 100 percent of the profits from smaller versions being made by local students will go back into schools.
