Art Hamlin is back home training youth wrestlers, but over the weekend Hamlin went from kids coach to proud Papa. Art was in Des Moines, IA cheering on his son, Leigh University senior Robert Hamlin, at the NCAA Wrestling championship tournament.
"It's been an interesting year with injuries and such," Art Hamlin said. "So we were just thankful he was there."
Not only did Robert show up, he won 4 matches making it to the 184 pound championship bout Saturday Night.
"To go from third to being in the championship match, that was a big deal," Art Hamlin said.
Unfortunately, The 4 time State Champ and 3 time New England Champ at Mt. Mansfield Union, came up short in his bid for a national championship. He finished as a runner up for the second time in his college career.
"Robert stuck in there. I think he did a good job," 11 year olds wrestler Matt Wixson said.
"We would have liked to see him win gold, be he won a lot of hearts, won a lot of hearts," Art Hamlin said.
As Robert Hamlin's college career comes to an end, a new croup of wrestlers begin their career at Mount Mansfield Union. Like Robert, they will have Art Hamlin at their side."
"These guys in the room right now," Art Hamlin said. "That's what it's all about."
"It's really motivating to have his father here cheer us on and be our coach," said 14 year old wrestler Charlie Myers.
