BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man has been accused of taking checks from his landlord and forging others for more than $1,200.
Daniel Torres of Bennington pleaded innocent Monday to two felony counts of forgery.
The Rutland Herald reports a police affidavit says the landlord, who rented an apartment to the 26-year-old Torres, said three of her checks had gone missing. She said one for $800 was taken to a bank by Torres. A teller wouldn't cash it.
Police said a check for $450 was cashed by a woman as a favor to Torres. She said Torres told her the money was a refund from his security deposit. He didn't want to cash it himself because he owed money to the bank.
