3 Vt. homeowners close deals to sell flooded homes

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Officials say three Vermont families whose homes were destroyed by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene have had their properties bought by a Federal Emergency Management Agency hazard mitigation program.

Gov. Peter Shumlin says two of the properties are in Bethel and one is in Bolton.

The program buys properties in flood-prone areas, giving homeowners the pre-flood value of the homes. The homes are then torn down so they won't be prone to damage from future floods.

Shumlin says the buyouts enable homeowners to get a fresh start.

FEMA has allocated $13 million for the program. Officials say 92 homes have received final approval for the buyout, most from Irene flooding, but also from flooding earlier in 2011.
