Vt. considers crime classification system

Posted: Updated:

The Senate Judiciary Committee is looking to create a classification system for crimes in Vermont.

Currently the state does not have a system like other states.

Right now any crime resulting in less than two years in jail is considered a misdemeanor. A felony charge requires more than two years in prison, but right now there is no minimum sentence or even recommended average sentence.

Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Sears of Bennington says when an embezzlement of $5 million is equal to an embezzlement for $10, something is wrong.
