Bill exempting cloud computing tax fails in Vt. House

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

A move to protect cloud computing from a sales tax failed in the Vermont House.

Companies are increasingly using cloud computing, storing all of their digital data off-site.

The state is set to impose the 6 percent sales tax on those cloud services beginning this summer.

A bill that would have exempted cloud computing from the tax was defeated Thursday on a vote of 90-53.

Lawmakers estimate the tax will raise about $2 million a year.
