Grant helps Burlington businesses save on energy bills

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A new million dollar grant is helping small businesses in Burlington make upgrades to save on their energy use.

The energy efficiency program is called on-bill financing. It allows small businesses like Waggy's Deli to pay for energy upgrades through the future savings on their electric bills. Waggy's will upgrade their lighting to LEDs, change over their cooler to a forced-air cold intake and other savings efforts they say simply would have cost too much if they had to come up with the cash up front.

"It allows small businesses to afford to have these changes made, and then the price is rolled right into our electric bill. And then we will see a drastic change in our electric bill. So it in turn it sort of pays for itself, which is nice because it allows us to make the changes we've wanted to make, for years, but haven't been able to afford," said Melissa Short of Waggy's Deli.

Waggy's will be the first business in the program. They say on their coolers alone, they should save about 40 percent off their monthly bill when the upgrades are made. Burlington Electric is encouraging other small businesses to join.
