Experts to help Burlington with energy efficiency

Posted: Updated:

Burlington is getting some free help from a team of experts to improve energy efficiency in the city.

Burlington won a Smarter Cities Challenge grant from IBM and team members were introduced Tuesday.

Over the next three weeks, the team will analyze and recommend ways Burlington can become a greener place to live. The team members could not name specific examples of where they will find savings, but one focus will be on the use of Burlington Electric's smart grid metering system.

"We'll be meeting with the three largest consumers of electricity actually in Burlington. We're meeting obviously with the mayor and BED, but Burlington school systems, as well as Fletcher Allen and University of Vermont on how they see being able to use the advanced metering systems," said Marian Lawlor of IBM.

Burlington is the second smallest city to win one of the IBM Smarter Cities grants. The pro bono work is valued at about $400,000.
