Talk to focus on preventing concussions

Posted: Updated:

Head injuries among young people are on the rise. So, a sports medicine nurse from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center will be addressing the problem with parents and coaches this Saturday at the Central Vermont Memorial Civic Center in Montpelier. The talk will focus on concussions and how to prevent them, especially multiple concussions that can have long-term health effects.

"The CDC reports about 1.8 million concussions a year seen in the emergency room. So, that doesn't include the people who don't go to the emergency room, the people who don't report they have had a concussion. So, the CDC says it could be as high as 3.8 million," said Susanna Gadsby of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Those numbers are for kids aged 10-19.

Saturday's event is free. It starts at noon.
