Immigrant licenses bill delayed in Montpelier

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

A bill that would allow immigrant workers to get Vermont driver's licenses is delayed.

It was approved last week by the Transportation Committee, and the Senate was supposed to take it up Wednesday.

Instead, it is being delayed until next week because the bill is being sent to the Finance Committee for review, since immigrants would have to pay a fee to get the special driving privilege card.

Dairy farms in the state employ about 1,500 migrant farmworkers-- many of whom are in the country illegally and say they have to rely on their employers for transportation.
