First meeting for Burlington Telecom co-op group

Posted: Updated:

A group that hopes to turn Burlington Telecom into a cooperative is looking for people interested in becoming members.

The city-owned utility owes $17 million to taxpayers and might be on the hook for millions more to its former lender. The city has been looking for a partner to bail out the cable and internet provider. Organizers of the co-op idea have incorporated with the state and now plan to hold their first official meeting to adopt bylaws, elect a board of directors and recruit members. So far, about 400 individuals and businesses have made pledges to the group.

That meeting will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Champlain School.
