Medals of valor replaced

BERLIN, N.H. -

Returning medals of valor to their rightful owner.

Wednesday, New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte presented several medals to Jeanette Theriault of Berlin, N.H. Theriault's husband, Joseph, served in World War II and was present-- but off camera-- during the famous Mount Suribachi flag raising photo. During the war the medals went missing. Ayotte helped get them back.

"It means a lot because he was so proud of being a Marine and fighting on Iwo Jima and someone stole his duffle bag with all his medals. And he talked about getting them back, but we never pursued it. But, now, my niece and her husband worked hard and got the medal and I am so proud of them," Theriault said.

Among the medals are a Bronze Star and a World War II Victory Medal.

Joe Theriault passed away in 2011.
