Clear-cutting pilot program for Adirondacks

Posted: Updated:

A pilot program to extend clear-cutting on some Adirondack Park land has the support of New York lawmakers.

The three-year experiment would allow more clear-cutting on about 700,000 acres of privately-owned forest land in the park. Participating owners must be certified as environmentally sustainable, but they don't need to have an environmental review.

The Press-Republican says supporters think the changes will help loggers meet the demand for green-certified forest products, but opponents say there won't be enough control over how many trees are cut.
