UVM says alumni directory calls not a scam

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The University of Vermont wants its alumni to know a recent phone call campaign is not a scam.

UVM is wrapping up an outreach initiative to roughly 90,000 alums in an effort to update its alumni contact information. The school hired a company out of Texas to make the calls because UVM says it simply does not have the resources to take on a project of that size on its own.

But some alums complained that the company tactics are aggressive.

"What I would say to alums who feel like this has been a bit too aggressive is that there is an opt-out option at any time, they can communicate directly with the alumni association office here or when they are contacted by the company they can simply say please stop calling me," said Rich Bundy of the University of Vermont Foundation.

This is the first time UVM has updated its directory in a decade. Right now it only has about half of its alums' email addresses.
