BARRE, Vt. -

A popular substitute teacher at Barre Town Elementary School has died.

A year ago, WCAX News profiled Dick Swift for our "Super Senior" series. Dick had worked in various jobs around Central Vermont, but 15 years ago he decided to work with kids. He said, "I think in the back of my mind I always wished I trained to be a teacher."

Dick was working until a month ago. He died of lung cancer. He was 84.

The elementary school released a statement saying, "Mr. Swift was a grandfatherly type man who was incredibly kind, calm and a mentor to numerous students."

There will be a service for Dick Swift Sat., April 13, at 10 a.m. at Barre Town Elementary School.
