Shumlin on sales tax: We have given NH enough love

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Governor Peter Shumlin (D-Vermont) says Vermont has given enough "love" to New Hampshire when it comes to taxes.

The Vermont House has passed a bill that includes about $27 million in new taxes. The Governor says that entire tax proposal has to go away.

"I got to tell you, I have made it very clear that we have one of the most progressive income taxes in the country. I am proud of that. I helped write our progressive tax policy, but you can't ask Vermonters to pay it twice. We have a regressive sales tax that we use broadly driving jobs to New Hampshire. Expanding the sales tax going back to a state that taxes clothing, shoes. That just drives more people to New Hampshire. We have given New Hampshire enough love," Shumlin said.

The Governor hopes he can convince the Senate not to go along with the House plan. Backers of the plan say the state can not afford to cut the budget because that will hurt programs and services for Vermonters.
