Wind dislodges bricks from Montpelier building

Posted: Updated:

A crumbling façade is causing problems in Montpelier.

The stretch of sidewalk in front of the Aubuchon hardware store is closed off to pedestrians.
Sunday afternoon strong winds caused chunks of bricks from the multiple story building to fall to the ground. Monday structural engineers were in tower trucks assessing the problem and potential dangers.

"Our concern is keeping people out of the area until we are satisfied, and the engineers are satisfied, that there will be no more failure of the wall and things falling," said Montpelier Fire Chief Robert Gowans.

Gowans said scaffolding may be built to allow pedestrians access to the sidewalk while repairs are underway.  City employees have created a new handicap ramp to replace the one that is currently off limits.
