DHMC campaign targets abuse against babies

Posted: Updated:

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is working to prevent abuse against babies.

For the third year the hospital is taking part in the Period of Purple Crying campaign.  It's a prevention initiative, in partnership with Kohl's Department Stores, to educate young parents on ways to deal with a crying baby.

Kits will be given to 20 area schools in the Upper Valley. They include a doll, DVD, and stress ball.  The goal is to prevent abuse before it happens.

"This whole issue is really a public health issue and prevention is really more cost effective than taking care of a severely brain injured compromised child on the other side," said
Debra Samaha with the DHMC Injury Prevention Center.

The need to prevent abuse against babies was recently highlighted in the courtroom. A 25-year-old Hartford man is accused of aggravated domestic assault, for allegedly breaking a 13-week-old's arm who was in his care.
