BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - An 86-year-old Vermont woman is facing a felony charge after the car she was driving allegedly hit and killed a 79-year-old man who was crossing a road in North Bennington.
Georgianna Carter has pleaded not guilty to a charge of gross negligent vehicle operation with a fatality resulting.
The Bennington Banner reports Carter surrendered her driver's license following the Jan. 26 crash.
Police say Henry Chalifoux was found by emergency personnel next to his mailbox. He died en route to the hospital.
Carter told police she saw Chalifoux and tried to avoid hitting him. Witnesses told police Carter's vehicle did not appear to be speeding, but she did not brake or swerve prior to impact.
A witness also told police Chalifoux did not appear to look before crossing.
