Could it be the same deer?

This week, Janet Reed sent WCAX News a photo from Craftsbury. It's been a long winter for the deer and they were out getting grass where they could find nourishment. In this deer herd was a so-called piebald deer. That's a deer that's mostly white, but does have some brown coloring. You do see them from time-to-time, but it's rare. You certainly look twice when seeing them in Vermont.

Let's back up for the rest of this story. After seeing the deer Monday night, another Craftsbury resident, Elena, emailed WCAX. She sent us a photo taken in the summer of 2011 of a piebald fawn. A group of neighbors rescued the young animal that had been scared away from a hayfield by heavy equipment. Mom wasn't around. They quickly got the tiny animal back on its wobbly feet and into the wild, but not before snapping a picture or two. They always wondered if the fawn they named Bianca survived. The picture from this week makes them believe it did.

Of course, it could be another animal. But with the same rare markings and the same down, they believe it must be Bianca.
