Church Street Marketplace fountain to be removed

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Change is on the way to Burlington's Church Street Marketplace. The fountain that once welcomed people to the top of the pedestrian mall is coming down.

The move comes nearly 20 years after the structure was constructed in 1994. The team in charge of the Church Street Marketplace says it is looking to replace the fountain with something that is more accessible to visitors year-round. Right now, the fountain only operates for about half the year.

"It wasn't in the way, but like all things that have living parts to them it got to the point where it was more to maintain than we were reasonably able to do," said Becky Cassidy of the Church Street Marketplace.

The fountain removal is slated to be complete by the end of May. The Marketplace plans to spend the next year looking at ideas for what might take its place.
